Thank you to Governor Kate Brown for proclaiming October as Head Start Awareness Month in Oregon!
The State of Oregon partners with the Office of Head Start to support funding for 21 Head Start programs across the state to provide Federal Head Start and Oregon Head Start PreKindergarten (OPK) services to our communities. In addition, there are seven programs across the state of Oregon that provide OPK services (with Oregon-only funding). In Oregon, the majority of slots are funded through state dollars; clearly showing the important investment in these services. Currently over 16,000 children and families receive free Head Start services in Oregon every year.
Head Start programs serve the families of young children who face risk factors that will affect school success. The focus of services are on School Readiness and supporting positive, goal-oriented relationships with families, to better support our communities.
As part of the Head Start Impact Study, researchers determined that, “Providing access to Head Start has a positive impact on children’s preschool experiences. There are statistically significant differences between the Head Start group and the control group on every measure of children’s preschool experiences measured in this study.”
Please join us in celebrating Head Start Awareness Month in Oregon!
